NUCLER POWER STATION

The UK currently has several operational nuclear power stations, primarily using Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) technology, with one Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) at Sizewell B. Several older stations have been decommissioned, and new construction, like Hinkley Point C, is underway but facing delays.

Operational Stations:

  • Sizewell B: The UK's only operational PWR, located in Suffolk.

  • AGR Stations: Hartlepool, Heysham 1 & 2, and Torness are currently operational.

  • Decommissioning: Hinkley Point B and Hunterston B are in the defueling process, which is the first stage of decommissioning.

New Construction:

Hinkley Point C: A new nuclear power station under construction in Somerset, expected to use two EPR reactors Sizewell C and planned for Suffolk, it is intended to be a near-replica of Hinkley Point C.

Key Points:

  • AGR Technology: The UK has relied heavily on AGR technology, which is now being phased out.

  • Sizewell B: Remains a key part of the UK's nuclear fleet.

  • New Build Program: The UK government is investing heavily in new nuclear power to meet energy demands and climate goals.

  • Decommissioning: Several older stations are in the process of being decommissioned, a long and complex process, according to the Office for Nuclear Regulation.
